Abstract

The study investigates bread metaphors in Egyptian Arabic and English proverbs using a cultural cognitive approach. A sample of bread proverbs was gathered in both languages. The Egyptian Arabic proverbs were collected from Al-Amthāl al-ʻāmmīyah: mashrūḥah wa-murattabah ḥasab al-ḥarf al-awwal min al-mathal (Taymour, 2014). The English proverbs were compiled using the Dictionary of American Proverbs (Mieder et al., 1992). The data was then analyzed qualitatively based on cross-domain mapping as a distinct feature of the Conceptual Metaphor Theory (Lakoff & Johnson, 2003), the Great Chain Metaphor Theory (Lakoff & Turner, 1989), and the universality and variation of metaphors in culture (Kövecses, 2005). The study has yielded the following findings: First, it has revealed the important role of bread in conceptualizing abstract events. Second, it has shown the role of bread in creating and reinterpreting new areas and events based on familiar experiences. Finally, it has established the significance of cultural settings in metaphorical thought and examined how context influences the use and understanding of metaphors.
