Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of music therapy on improving cognitive, social, language, and motor skills of seven students with Down’s syndrome. The participants in the current study attended two music therapy sessions for four consecutive months. All participants attended in daily programs at two sections at Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services: the Early Intervention Center and Al-Wafa School for Developmental Training. Their ages ranged from five to seven years, and their developmental skills were determined based on results of the following assessment tools and scales: adaptive behavior scale- portage and AEPS assessment tool. To measure achievement, Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test was used to obtain baseline and post intervention measures. Data analysis showed that the difference between the two average-scores was statistically significant, where the post intervention average-score outnumbered the baseline average-score. The results of the study support the hypothesis indicating that music therapy has a positive effect on improving the cognitive, social, language, and motor skills of children with Down’s syndrome.
